App Store Passes 1.5 Billion Downloads
Apple, News — By Paul Smith on July 14, 2009 at 17:15
To celebrate the first birthday of the app store Apple has the remarkable good fortune of being able to announce that so far 1.5 billion apps have been downloaded.
The number is really quite staggering when you consider what a small percentage of the global mobile market Apple controls. The numbers speak for themselves; 1.5 billion downloads, 65,000 apps, and 100,000 developers enrolled in Apple’s dev programme. Steve Jobs himself aid of the app store “The App Store is like nothing the industry has ever seen before in both scale and quality.”
Of course Apple faces increasing competition as other manufacturers and networks launch their own app stores. If we’re being honest most of the new app stores probably won’t make it as big, but there are a few contenders out there who might just give Apple a run for its money.
