Mozilla App for iPhone … Firefox?

FirefoxMozilla is all set to release an app in the Apple App Store and speculation is mounting as to what exactly it is. Of course the most popular guess is that it’s an iPhone version of Mozilla’s popular Firefox web browser. However, there is an argument both for and against it being Firefox based upon a comment made by Jon Lily, Mozilla’s CEO: “Mozilla will release an app to the iPhone app store in the next few weeks. It’ll surprise people.”

That statement could be taken two ways. On the one hand one might say that the surprise is that it won;t be Firefox because that’s what everyone is expecting. On the other hand it would arguably be equally surprising if Firefox did appear in the App store as it would be a direct competitor for Apple’s own Safari browser, which comes pre-installed on the iPhone. That Apple has previously rejected apps that it claims duplicate ‘core functionality’ would seem to be a strike against a Firefox App Store release, but you never know …
